Self-care for ourselves first

I mentor clients in the benefits of mindfulness & meditation as a way of creating a whole new level of self-care. By adopting a mindful approach to self- care, we learn to incorporate important time into our day that can help us deal with our busy schedules and create an expansive feeling of time- rather than feeling time- poor.

We must attend to ourselves- mind, body and spirit if we are to care for and love others.

Self-care is not about being selfish

On the contrary, it’s making sure you have the energy, calmness and presence to deal with a challenging world where many people are living on auto- pilot; doing the same things every day without giving any time to pay attention to their inner world. It is connecting mind, body and spirit and being in the present moment, fully.

Not being lost in the past and not worrying about the future.

Does watching tv count as self- care?

It might if you are watching something that makes you feel good, especially if it makes you laugh or something that helps you understand life, particularly videos on psychology and spirituality.

I love to watch videos on You Tube when I want screen time and I do love art festival type movies and really enjoy a lot of the content on Maori TV.

RNZ- Radio New Zealand

I find myself listening to music on Spotify or Radio New Zealand- I love the Saturday music hour Nashville Babylon with Mark Rogers and the Sunday morning show with Jim Mora, so many great interviews.

Anything that helps to nurture us and return us to a state of positive well-being without causing any harm to ourselves or any other sentient being constitutes self-care.

Suggestions

Doing things like yoga, Tai Chi, Qi Gong, being out in nature- forest bathing- Shinrin Yoku, walking on the beach, swimming; these are all examples of self- care. Our emphasis is on being calm, relaxed and engaging with the world just as it is, not trying to change anything, just accepting, and noticing. Many of these things are free and easily accessible- there are so many wonderful, guided meditations and yoga classes available on You Tube.

Other examples of self-care could be taking a long relaxing bath, being pampered at the salon, going for a massage, Reiki, Rongoa Maori, energy clearing- there is no limit to the choices available, other than your financial capacity and making time to nurture yourself.
